Cantilever Racking in Singapore: When You Actually Need It
Most people who search for cantilever racking in Singapore do not need cantilever racking. They need selective pallet racking, and they have arrived at the word "cantilever" because their load is awkward in some way — long, heavy, or difficult to get a forklift into.
That is worth saying up front, because cantilever is a specific answer to a specific problem, and buying it when you do not need it costs more per square metre of storage than almost anything else you could put on the floor. Here is how we work out which one you actually need.
What cantilever racking is
Cantilever racking has no front upright. It is a row of vertical columns with arms projecting from one or both sides, and the load rests across those arms. Nothing blocks the front face of the bay.
That single design decision is the whole point. On selective pallet racking, the front upright is what stops you loading a six-metre length of steel — the beam opening is only as wide as the bay. On cantilever, there is no opening to be limited by. You load along the arms, and the practical limit becomes the length of the run rather than the width of one bay.

The loads that genuinely need it
In our experience there are four, and they all share the same characteristic: the item is longer than a pallet, so a pallet-based system fights you.
Timber and board. Hardwood lengths, plywood sheets, MDF. Long, heavy, and easily damaged if you try to slide them past an upright.
Steel and extrusion. Bar, tube, angle, aluminium extrusion. Often the heaviest cantilever load we see per metre, and the one where arm deflection matters most.
Pipe and conduit. Round stock that rolls. Needs arms with lipped or stopped ends, which changes the arm specification.
Furniture and panel goods. Bulky rather than heavy — the constraint is clearance and handling damage, not tonnage.

When pallet racking is the better answer
If your stock arrives on pallets and leaves on pallets, cantilever is the wrong tool no matter how heavy it is. Weight alone does not call for cantilever; overhang does.
Our V-series covers load classes from 3,000 kg to over 10,000 kg per beam level — V3000 and V5000 in the Heavy-Duty tier up to 5,000 kg per level, and V6000 through V10000 in Super Heavy-Duty above that. Boltless shelving handles up to 200 kg per level and Medium-Duty up to 800 kg. There is very little a Singapore warehouse stores on a pallet that falls outside that range.
So the honest test is not "is my load heavy" — it is "does my load hang past the front of the bay, or need to be pulled out sideways". If the answer is no, selective racking will store it denser and cheaper.
What we check before quoting cantilever
We do not size cantilever from a catalogue, and we do not quote it from a phone call. Before we cut steel we want to know:
Longest item, and how many of them. The longest item sets arm spacing; the quantity sets whether you need single-sided against a wall or double-sided down an aisle.
Weight per metre, not weight per item. Cantilever arms are governed by the bending moment at the column, so where the weight sits along the arm matters as much as the total.
How it is handled. Forklift with a boom, side-loader, overhead crane, or by hand. Each implies a different aisle width and a different column base detail.
The slab. Cantilever concentrates load into fewer base plates than pallet racking does. We check the slab before we commit to a column spacing, not after.

Why we will not give you a per-bay price
We publish indicative ranges for selective racking — V3000 at S$380 to S$650 per bay, V5000 at S$650 to S$1,000, V8000 at S$900 to S$1,400 — and we are clear that even those vary 50 to 80 per cent for the same nominal bay depending on height, beam length, seismic class, finish and floor-fix detail.
Cantilever varies more than that, not less. Arm length, arm count, single or double sided, column section and base detail all move together with the load case. A per-bay figure for cantilever would be a number we could not stand behind, so we do not publish one. We quote after a site survey.

Inspection, once it is standing
Cantilever is inspected to the same standard as the rest of your racking. We inspect under SS EN 15635 principles — upright plumbness, impact damage, missing safety pins, deflection, base-plate fixings — and issue a written report with green, amber and red triage. Green is within tolerance, amber needs remediation within six months, red means unload the bay now.
Typical cost is S$3.50 to S$6.00 per upright frame, with a S$1,200 minimum per site visit.
Cantilever earns its inspection more than most systems do, because the failure mode is different. A damaged pallet racking upright usually shows itself as a bent front post at forklift height. A cantilever column that has been struck can look fine and still have lost its moment capacity at the base.
Where cantilever sits against the alternatives
