What Does "Racking King" Actually Mean in Singapore?

We're Wong Lye Racking, and some of our clients — especially in the 3PL and cold-room sectors — have started calling us the "racking king" in Singapore. It's flattering, but we're cautious about labels. We didn't set out to dominate a category. We set out to fix a problem that kept showing up in our own warehouse in 2014: no local contractor would do a proper site survey, match the steel to the actual pallet loads, or coordinate the forklift turning radius before quoting.

So we built our own racks. Customers saw the work and asked us to build theirs. Over 1,500 commercial and industrial installations later, racking has become our primary focus — designed, fabricated and installed in-house in Singapore.

If "racking king" means anything to us, it's this: we do the slow work first. The unglamorous stuff. The site survey with a laser measure and a loaded test pallet. The slab-capacity check before we anchor a single upright. The forklift spec sheet cross-referenced against your actual aisle width. The load case calculated to your heaviest SKU, not the brochure maximum.

How We Actually Approach a Racking Project (And Why It Takes Longer Than You'd Expect)

When a prospect calls us for a quote, the first question we ask isn't "How many bays do you want?" It's "Can we come down and measure?"

Here's what we check on every site visit:

  • Slab condition and levelness. A 10mm dip over 3 metres can throw off upright plumb, especially on VNA or double-deep systems. We've seen floors poured to ±15mm tolerance — fine for general use, terrible for 10-metre-tall frames.
  • Ceiling height and overhead obstructions. ACMV ducts, sprinkler drops, cable trays. If your actual clear height is 7.2m instead of the advertised 8m, your top beam level drops, and so does your usable pallet count.
  • Forklift fleet: type, mast height, turning radius. A 1.6-tonne reach truck needs 2.7m aisles. A 2.5-tonne counterbalance needs 3.6m. If you spec the wrong system, you either can't access the pallets or you waste 30% of your floor to unnecessarily wide aisles.
  • Actual pallet load and load distribution. Is it 800kg of evenly distributed cartons, or 800kg of liquid in two IBCs sitting in the centre? The beam deflection case is completely different.
  • Fire suppression and BCA/SCDF requirements. Mezzanines above 100m² often require PE-stamped drawings and SCDF submission. High-bay racks in certain use classes trigger sprinkler-head spacing rules. We coordinate this upfront, not after the deposit is paid.

This process takes two to three days. Some catalogue resellers quote in two hours. But we've spent the last decade fixing their mistakes, and the pattern is always the same: the system was never matched to the site.

In-House Fabrication: What We Make and What We Import

We fabricate most of our components in Singapore using cold-roll forming for uprights and automated welding for beam end-plates. Our standard Selective, Drive-In, and Cantilever systems are 100% locally produced, PSB-tested, and come with mill certificates on request.

For Super Heavy-Duty applications — think automotive parts distribution, steel coil storage, or industrial mould archives — we import heavy-section profiles that exceed what our cold-roll lines can economically produce. But even then, we do final assembly, quality checks, and field modifications in-house.

Why does this matter? Because when a client calls with a damaged upright or a retrofit request, we don't wait for a container from Johor or Guangdong. We pull the profile from stock, cut it to size, punch the holes, and deliver it the same week. On two occasions, we've had emergency replacements fabricated and installed within 48 hours after a forklift collision.

The Three Mistakes We See Most Often (And How We Avoid Them)

1. Overloading beams because "it's only 50kg more per pallet." Beam deflection isn't linear. A 1,200kg-rated beam at 2.7m span might flex 8mm under rated load. Add another 100kg and you can hit 12mm — enough to trigger a visible sag and, more seriously, to stress the welds at the end-plate. We calculate every beam to AS4084 and provide the load placard. If your SKU mix has changed and you're now storing heavier items, call us for a re-rate before you load it.

2. Ignoring forklift mast sway and aisle width. A reach truck's mast can sway ±40mm at full extension. If your aisle is specced to the minimum theoretical width and your driver is moving fast, the forks will clip the uprights. We've seen entire frames knocked out of plumb this way. Our layout drawings include a 100mm buffer on each side — it costs you one bay per ten, but it saves you a $15,000 re-plumb six months later.

3. Skipping the PE stamp on mezzanines because "it's only a small one." BCA's threshold isn't based on your subjective sense of size. If your mezzanine is a controlled load-bearing structure and it exceeds the exemption criteria, you need a PE-stamped drawing and an approved-plans set before you install. We've had clients come to us halfway through a non-compliant install, asking us to reverse-engineer a submission. It's always more expensive and time-consuming than doing it right the first time.

What Actually Makes a Racking System Last 15+ Years

We have Selective systems still in service from our 2015 installs. Here's what they have in common:

  • Correct anchor spec for the slab. We use Hilti HIT-HY 200 or equivalent for most industrial slabs, sized to the upright load case. Undersized anchors let the frame rock under forklift impact. Oversized anchors crack thin slabs. We match the anchor to the slab report.
  • Regular inspections and minor repairs. A bent upright brace or a cracked weld, caught early, is a $200 fix. Left alone for two years, it becomes a $4,000 frame replacement. We offer annual inspection packages, but even a quarterly walk-through by your warehouse manager — checking plumb, looking for dents, tightening loose bolts — makes a huge difference.
  • Proper operator training. This isn't our scope, but it's the single biggest factor. A driver who knows how to approach a bay square-on, who doesn't "bump and nudge" the uprights, who reports contact immediately — that's worth more than an extra millimetre of steel.

When to Call Us (And When Not To)

We're a good fit if you want a racking system designed around your actual operation, fabricated to order, and installed by the same team that did the drawings. We're especially strong on complex layouts: mezzanine-over-Selective hybrids, Cantilever racks for long steel or timber, VNA systems in constrained footprints, and heavy-duty archive racks rated to 3,000kg+ per level.

We're not a good fit if you need a two-bay garage shelving unit or a light-duty retail display. For that, a catalogue supplier will be faster and cheaper. We also don't do residential renovation or HDB works under this business entity — that's handled by our sister offering, Larry Contractors.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are you really the "racking king" in Singapore?

We don't use that label ourselves — it's something a few long-term clients started calling us, and it's caught on in certain circles. What we can say with confidence: we've designed, fabricated and installed over 1,500 commercial and industrial racking systems since 2014, all from our Singapore facility, and we do the engineering and site surveys in-house. Whether that makes us the "king" is for others to judge. We just focus on doing the work properly.

Do you only fabricate in Singapore, or do you import racks?

For Super Heavy-Duty applications that require heavy-section profiles beyond what our lines can produce, we import those specific components, but we still do final assembly, quality control, and all installation work in-house. How long does a typical racking project take from quote to installation?

It depends on the complexity and whether we need to coordinate BCA or SCDF submissions. For a straightforward Selective racking fitout — say, 40 bays in an existing warehouse with a known slab and forklift fleet — we typically need one week for survey and drawings, two weeks for fabrication, and two to three days for installation. Mezzanine systems or VNA layouts with PE-stamped submissions can add four to six weeks for approvals. We give you a detailed timeline in the proposal.

Can you retrofit or expand an existing racking system that another contractor installed?

Yes, we do this regularly. We'll measure the existing frames, identify the profile and load rating, and design the extension to match — or, if the original system is under-specced or damaged, we'll propose a compliant replacement. We've taken over half-finished projects, repaired collision damage, and added mezzanine levels over existing Selective racks. The key is getting accurate measurements and a proper load assessment before we quote.

Do you provide annual rack inspections or maintenance?

We offer annual inspection packages where we check plumb, inspect welds and anchors, look for collision damage, and provide a written report with photos and recommendations. For clients who prefer to do their own checks, we also run a half-day training session on what to look for and how to document it. Either way, catching a bent upright or a loose anchor early is always cheaper than waiting for a frame to fail under load.
