What We Mean by "Industrial Racking" in Singapore

When we talk about racking in the Singapore context, we're covering seven core types, each suited to different warehouse operations:

  • Selective Pallet Racking — The most common. Every pallet is accessible. Simple, flexible, and forgiving if your SKU mix changes weekly.
  • Double-Deep Racking — Two pallets deep per bay. You need double-reach forklifts, but you gain about 30% more pallet positions in the same footprint.
  • Drive-In Racking — High-density, LIFO (last in, first out). The forklift drives into the rack lanes. We see this a lot in 3PL cold stores and bonded warehouses where SKU velocity is low.
  • VNA / Narrow Aisle — Uses wire-guided or rail-guided forklifts in aisles as narrow as 1.6 m. Maximum cube utilisation, but your forklift fleet and slab tolerance need to match.
  • Cantilever Racking — For long goods: timber, steel profiles, pipes, aluminium extrusions. No front columns, so you can load from the side with overhead cranes or forklifts.
  • Heavy-Duty Racking — Beams rated for 2,500 kg to 4,000 kg per level, sometimes more. We cold-roll most profiles in-house; the really heavy section steel (120×50×3.0 mm uprights and above) we import and weld locally, then send for PSB testing.
  • Mezzanine Floor Systems — A second (or third) level supported by racking uprights or standalone columns. We coordinate BCA and SCDF submissions, PE stamps, and means-of-escape compliance when the mezzanine is used for storage or light assembly.

Each of these has a place. The question we ask first is: what are you actually storing, how fast does it move, and what equipment do you already have?

Why We Started Fabricating Our Own Racks in Singapore

We didn't set out to become a racking manufacturer. Wong Lye started in 2011 as a logistics business. In 2014, we needed racks for our own warehouse. We called three contractors. One quoted without visiting. One insisted on a configuration that wouldn't work with our forklift turning radius. The third ghosted after the deposit.

So we built our own. We bought a cold-roll forming line, learned to fabricate upright frames and beam end-plates, did the load testing, and installed it ourselves. The racks worked. Clients who visited our warehouse asked if we could build theirs. By 2016, racking had become its own division.

Today, we fabricate most components in-house at our Singapore facility — uprights, beams, bracing, wire decking, base plates. We import only the heaviest profiles (for Super Heavy-Duty applications) and some specialty accessories. Every batch is PSB-tested; mill certificates are available on request. We don't dropship from China and hope for the best.

What Most "Racking SG" Searches Miss (And Why It Matters)

When someone Googles "racking SG", they usually want three things: a supplier, a price, and a lead time. What they often don't realise is that the real cost isn't the steel — it's the mistakes that happen when the steel doesn't match the site.

We've spent two decades fixing these mistakes. Here are the most common:

1. Beam Capacity Sold by Upright Height, Not Actual Load

A supplier quotes you "selective racking, 1,000 kg per level". Sounds fine. But 1,000 kg spread over a 2.7 m beam is very different from 1,000 kg on a 1.8 m beam. Beam deflection increases with the cube of the span. If your pallets are wider than the quote assumes, or if you're stacking two pallets side-by-side on one beam pair, the deflection can exceed safe limits — even if the catalogue says "1,000 kg".

We always ask: what is the actual pallet dimension, how is the load distributed, and what is the beam length after accounting for your aisle width?

2. Layouts That Look Good on AutoCAD but Fail the Forklift Turn

Your 1.8-tonne counterbalance forklift has a turning radius. If the aisle width is too tight, your operator will clip the uprights every time they reverse out of a bay. We've re-done three installations in the past year where the original contractor used the pallet width to size the aisle, not the forklift wheelbase and load overhang.

We measure the forklift — or ask for the manufacturer's spec sheet — before we finalise the layout. It's slower. It's also the only way to avoid expensive re-work six months later.

3. Mezzanine Floors Installed Without BCA Submission (Then Flagged During Audit)

A mezzanine is a change of use under the Building Control Act. Depending on the area and loading, it may require a PE-stamped structural drawing, a Change of Use application, and SCDF clearance (especially if the mezzanine creates an intermediate storey that affects means-of-escape calculations).

We've had clients come to us after another contractor installed a mezzanine without submission, then got flagged during a factory audit or HDB inspection. Rectification — including tear-down and re-submission — cost more than doing it right the first time.

We coordinate all BCA and SCDF submissions as part of the mezzanine scope. If a PE stamp is required, we engage the PE, prepare the drawings, and liaise with the authorities. It adds two to four weeks to the timeline, but it's non-negotiable.

How We Approach a New Racking Project in Singapore

Every project starts the same way: a site survey and a conversation. Here's what we look for:

  • Slab condition and tolerance. Is the floor level? Are there floor joints, drains, or column bases that limit rack placement? For VNA systems, we check slab flatness (typically FM2 or better).
  • Overhead clearance and obstructions. Sprinkler heads, cable trays, ACMV ducts, roller-shutter door tracks. All of these affect upright height and beam placement.
  • Forklift fleet. Make, model, mast height, load capacity, and turning radius. If you're planning to upgrade forklifts in the next 12 months, we factor that into the aisle width now.
  • Pallet dimensions and load case. Are you storing 1,200×1,000 mm pallets at 800 kg each, or 1,200×1,200 mm pallets at 1,500 kg? Is the load evenly distributed, or are you stacking drums and IBCs (which concentrate weight at the centre)? We calculate beam deflection and upright load per level based on the worst-case scenario you'll actually use, not the "typical" case.
  • SKU velocity and FIFO/LIFO. If you're running FIFO and fast-moving SKUs, Selective or Double-Deep makes sense. If it's slow-moving and high-volume, Drive-In or block stacking may be more cost-effective.

Once we have this data, we draw the layout in AutoCAD, run the load calculations, and send you a dimensioned plan before we quote. If the layout doesn't work, we say so — even if it means a smaller project or no project at all. We'd rather lose a quote than install a system that fails in six months.

What "Made in Singapore" Actually Means for Racking

Most racking in Singapore is imported as knock-down kits from China, Malaysia or Thailand, then assembled on-site by a local contractor. There's nothing wrong with this — if the components are tested, the welds are consistent, and the supplier understands Singapore load codes and site conditions.

We fabricate most of our racking components in Singapore using cold-roll forming for uprights and beams, and robotic welding for beam end-plates and bracing. The advantages:

  • Shorter lead times. We don't wait for container schedules. Standard Selective and Drive-In components are usually in stock; custom Heavy-Duty or Cantilever profiles take two to three weeks to roll and weld.
  • Quality control at every stage. We inspect the steel coil when it arrives, check the roll-forming tolerances, and batch-test the welds. If something is out of spec, we catch it before it leaves the workshop — not after it's installed.
  • PSB testing and mill certs on request. Every profile batch is tested for load-bearing capacity and material grade. If you need documentation for insurance, audit or export purposes, we provide it.
  • Custom profiles without MOQ penalties. Need a 2,100 mm beam instead of 2,000 mm? Or a 4,500 mm upright with mid-bracing at 2,400 mm? We can roll it without hitting a 500-piece MOQ from an overseas supplier.

For Super Heavy-Duty applications (beams over 3,000 kg per pair, or uprights for mezzanines supporting 1,000 kg/m² live load), we import heavy-section steel and fabricate locally. It's a pragmatic balance: we're not trying to reinvent the entire supply chain, just control the parts that matter most for site performance.

Outdoor Shelter and Structure Works (When Racking Extends Beyond the Warehouse)

Sometimes the racking project extends outside the four walls. We've built covered storage areas for precast yards, steel stockholders, and logistics hubs — Cantilever racks under a shelter roof, or standalone Heavy-Duty frames supporting a mezzanine walkway and rain canopy.

These are hybrid projects: part racking, part structure. We coordinate the steelwork, roofing (usually Zincalume or polycarbonate), and any BCA submissions required for the shelter. If the structure is attached to an existing factory building, we liaise with the building owner's PE to ensure the connection points don't compromise the main structure.

It's slower and more paperwork-heavy than a straightforward racking install, but we've done enough of these to know where the approval bottlenecks are and how to size the foundations for Singapore soil conditions.

What to Actually Ask When You're Comparing Racking Suppliers in Singapore

If you're getting multiple quotes, here are the questions that separate the catalogue resellers from the contractors who will actually stand behind the work:

  • "Will you do a site survey before quoting, or are you quoting from my floor plan?" If they quote without visiting, they're guessing.
  • "What beam load rating are you using, and at what span length?" If they can't answer this in kN or kg per beam pair at a specific length, the rating is marketing, not engineering.
  • "Are your components PSB-tested? Can I see the test report?" If the answer is "our supplier is certified", ask for the actual test report for the batch you're buying.
  • "Who's doing the installation, and are they your in-house crew or a subcontractor?" Subcontractors aren't bad — but if the main supplier has never met the install team, coordination suffers.
  • "If this is a mezzanine, who's handling the BCA submission and PE coordination?" If they say "that's your responsibility", factor in the cost and time to engage a PE and submit yourself.
  • "What's your warranty, and what does it actually cover?" A warranty on material defects is standard. A warranty that includes site rectification, beam replacement due to overload, or upright damage from forklift impact is rare (we don't offer the last one either — forklift impact is operator damage, not a defect).

These questions won't win you friends, but they'll surface who's done the homework and who's filling in a quote template.

We can't give a honest per-bay price without knowing your beam span, load rating, upright height, and site access. A basic Selective Pallet Racking bay (2.7 m beam, 5 m upright, 1,000 kg per level, three levels) typically starts around $400–$600 per bay for materials and installation, but that price moves quickly once you add heavy-duty beams, mezzanine support, or Drive-In configurations. We always quote after a site survey, because the real cost drivers — slab condition, forklift aisle width, and load distribution — don't show up in a floor plan.

Do you only supply, or do you install as well?

We do both. Our installation crew is in-house — the same team who's been installing racking for us since 2016. We don't subcontract the install to a third party. If you have your own team and only need the steel, we can supply knock-down, but 95% of our clients take the full package because it simplifies coordination and warranty.

Can you fabricate custom rack sizes, or only standard profiles?

We fabricate most profiles in-house using cold-roll forming, so custom beam lengths, upright heights, and bracing positions are standard for us — no MOQ penalty, though custom Heavy-Duty profiles (over 3,000 kg per beam pair) may add one to two weeks to lead time. If you're adapting racking to an unusual ceiling height, column grid, or mezzanine layout, custom is often cheaper than forcing a standard profile to fit.

Do I need BCA approval for a mezzanine floor in my warehouse?
