Storage Racking System: What We Build and Why It Matters

We've been fabricating and installing storage racking systems in Singapore since 2014, starting with our own warehouse when we couldn't find a contractor who'd listen. Two decades and over 1,500 installs later, we've learned this: the storage racking system you need isn't determined by a catalogue—it's determined by your actual slab capacity, forklift turning radius, pallet dimensions, and SKU velocity. Here's how we approach it, and what you should look for if you're specifying one.

What Is a Storage Racking System, Really?

A storage racking system is the engineered steel framework that holds your inventory off the ground, arranged vertically so you can store more in the same footprint. Most people think of pallet racking—uprights, beams, and wire decks—but the term covers everything from Selective (one pallet deep, every position accessible) to Drive-In (multiple pallets deep, LIFO picking) to Cantilever (for long goods like timber, pipes, or steel bar) to VNA (very narrow aisle, wire-guided forklifts, maximum density).

We fabricate all of the above in-house using cold-roll forming for uprights and beams, with beam end-plates and frame connectors welded to specification. Heavy-section profiles for our Super Heavy-Duty tier are imported but finish-machined and assembled here. Every batch is PSB-tested, and mill certificates are available on request.

The system you choose depends on three things: how you pick (every SKU every day, or batches of the same SKU?), what you lift (forklift type, lift height, and aisle width), and what your floor can take (slab load capacity in kN/m²). Get any of those wrong and you either waste space or risk a collapse.

The Core Storage Racking System Types We Fabricate

Selective Pallet Racking

This is the default for most Singapore warehouses and 3PL operators. One pallet deep per rack face, every position accessible from the aisle. Beam levels are adjustable in 50 mm or 75 mm increments, so you can reconfigure as your SKU mix changes.

We size Selective racking to your actual pallet load—not the "standard 1,000 kg" often quoted. If you're storing resin pellets or metal components, a 1,200 x 1,000 mm pallet can easily hit 1,500 kg. We calculate beam deflection and upright capacity accordingly, and we match aisle width to your forklift's turning radius so your operators aren't fighting the layout every day.

Drive-In and Double-Deep Racking

When you have many pallets of the same SKU and you pick in batches, Drive-In (forklift drives into the lane, LIFO) or Double-Deep (two pallets deep, requires a reach truck with double-deep forks) makes better use of floor area. You sacrifice direct access, but you gain 40–60% more pallet positions in the same footprint.

The trade-off: you need guide rails, impact protection on the entry uprights, and a floor slab rated for concentrated forklift loads inside the rack structure. We've repaired a few Drive-In systems where the original installer skipped the upright bracing or undersized the rail beams—both are false economies that cost more to fix later.

Cantilever Racking

For timber, steel bar, pipe, aluminium extrusions, or any long goods that don't sit neatly on a pallet, we fabricate Cantilever systems: vertical columns with arms cantilevering out, no front uprights to obstruct loading. Arm capacity is rated per pair, and we weld arm-to-column connections to specification so there's no sag under load.

We see a lot of Cantilever racks outdoors—timber yards, steel stockists—so we hot-dip galvanise or apply heavy-duty epoxy coatings if the environment demands it.

VNA (Very Narrow Aisle) and Narrow Aisle Systems

When you need maximum pallet density and you're prepared to invest in wire-guided or rail-guided forklifts, VNA can shrink aisle width to 1,600–1,800 mm (versus 2,700–3,000 mm for standard counterbalance forklifts). You fit more rack rows in the same building, but you lose flexibility: VNA forklifts can't leave the guide rail, and reconfiguring the layout is a bigger job.

We've installed VNA in pharmaceutical cold stores and high-turnover 3PL hubs. The uprights and beams are the same as Selective; the difference is the aisle width, floor tolerances (FL50 or better), and the guide-rail installation, which we coordinate with the forklift supplier.

Heavy-Duty and Mezzanine-Integrated Systems

For archive boxes, small-parts bins, or hand-picked cartons, we build Heavy-Duty shelving—smaller uprights, closer beam spacing, rated for 200–600 kg per level. When you need two or three picking levels in a high-ceiling warehouse, we integrate the racking with a mezzanine floor: structural steel deck on top, racking below, stairs and cage ladders for access. The mezzanine columns and racking uprights share the load path, which means we do the structural calculations as one system and submit to BCA if the mezzanine area and use class require a building permit.

How We Size a Storage Racking System (and Why Most Quotes Skip This)

The catalogues make it look simple: "2,500 mm upright, 2,700 mm beam, 1,000 kg UDL per pair." But in practice, every warehouse is different. Here's what we measure before we quote:

  • Pallet dimensions and load case: We ask for the actual pallet size (1,200 x 1,000 mm? 1,100 x 1,100 mm? 1,200 x 800 mm?) and the heaviest loaded weight, not the average. A 1,500 kg pallet of metal parts needs heavier beams than a 1,000 kg pallet of cardboard cartons.
  • Forklift type and lift height: Counterbalance, reach truck, or VNA? What's the mast's collapsed height and extended reach? What's the turning radius with a load? We size aisle width to that, not to a generic 3-metre standard.
  • Slab capacity: We request the structural drawings or a soil/slab report. If the slab is rated for 15 kN/m² but your loaded rack imposes 20 kN/m² at the upright footplates, we either spread the load (base plates, rail beams) or reposition the layout. We've seen two collapses where the installer never checked the slab—one was on reclaimed land, one was a retrofitted industrial unit with a lightweight screed over an old floor.
  • Seismic and lateral bracing: Singapore isn't seismic, but we still add horizontal bracing and row spacers if the rack is over 6 metres tall or if it's outdoors and subject to wind load. PE sign-off is required for racks over a certain height or load—we coordinate that if the project requires it.

Once we have those numbers, we model the layout in CAD, calculate beam deflection and upright capacity, and generate a dimensioned drawing with rack positions, aisle widths, and load ratings. That drawing becomes the basis for fabrication and installation, and it's what you show the landlord or the insurer if they ask.

Fabrication, Testing, and Installation: What Happens After You Approve the Quote

We cold-roll the upright profiles and beam sections in-house, weld the beam end-plates (the hooks that lock into the upright perforations), and assemble the frames with diagonal bracing. Each batch is test-loaded to 125% of rated capacity and inspected for weld quality, beam straightness, and hook engagement. PSB test reports and mill certificates are filed and available on request.

Installation is scheduled around your operating hours—we've done plenty of weekend and night shifts for warehouses that can't shut down. We bring the frames, beams, safety pins, base plates, and all fixings. The team sets the uprights plumb, bolts the base plates to the slab (chemical anchors or expansion bolts, depending on slab condition), installs the beams level, and fits the row spacers and bracing. Wire decks or timber decking go on last, along with upright protectors if the aisle is tight.

Before we hand over, we walk the client through load ratings, beam adjustments, and safety protocols. We also leave a set of as-built drawings and a maintenance checklist—annual inspections, visual checks for impact damage, and beam-level adjustments if your SKU mix changes.

Common Mistakes We're Called In to Fix

Most of our repair work comes from systems that were sold by catalogue, sized to generic specs, and installed without a real site survey. Here's what we see:

  • Undersized beams: The client was quoted for 1,000 kg per beam pair but is actually storing 1,400 kg. The beams sag, the pallets tilt forward, and the safety inspector flags it.
  • Wrong aisle width: The racking was laid out for a 2.7-metre aisle, but the client's counterbalance forklift needs 3.0 metres to turn. The operators damage the uprights every week, and the whole system is slowly leaning.
  • No slab check: The rack was installed on a lightweight industrial slab rated for 10 kN/m². The loaded rack imposes 18 kN/m² at the uprights. The slab cracks, the uprights tilt, and the insurer won't cover it because the installation was non-compliant.
  • Missing bracing: Drive-In racks with no horizontal or spine bracing. The first heavy impact sends a shockwave through the entire structure, and the back uprights buckle.

All of these are avoidable if the work is done properly upfront. We charge more than the cheapest quote because we do the site survey, the calculations, and the PE coordination when required. It's slower, but it's also the only way to avoid a costly fix later.

What to Ask for When You're Comparing Storage Racking System Quotes

If you're evaluating quotes, here's what separates a real proposal from a catalogue copy-paste:

  • Load rating per beam level: Not "1,000 kg standard" but "1,500 kg per beam pair at 2,700 mm span, with deflection under L/180."
  • Upright and beam profile specifications: What gauge? What profile? Is it cold-rolled or hot-rolled? Are beam end-plates welded or bolted?
  • Slab load check: Did they ask for your structural drawings or slab capacity? If not, they're guessing.
  • Forklift compatibility: Did they ask for your forklift model, turning radius, and lift height? If not, the aisle width is probably wrong.
  • Test reports and certifications: PSB test reports, mill certificates, and weld inspection records should be available on request.
  • PE sign-off (if required): For tall racks, heavy loads, or mezzanine-integrated systems, ask if PE certification is included or if it's an add-on.

If the quote doesn't address these, you're buying a spec-sheet system, not an engineered one.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between Selective and Drive-In racking?

Selective gives you direct access to every pallet—one pallet deep per rack face, adjustable beam levels. Drive-In lets the forklift drive into the rack structure to store multiple pallets deep, which increases density but restricts access to LIFO (last in, first out). We recommend Selective if you have many SKUs with varied turnover, and Drive-In if you store large batches of the same SKU and pick in bulk.

How much weight can a storage racking system hold?

It depends on the beam span, upright gauge, and pallet load distribution. A typical Selective beam pair at 2,700 mm span might be rated for 1,500 kg to 2,500 kg per level, but we size it to your actual pallet weight and slab capacity. We don't quote a generic "1,000 kg" unless we've verified that's what you're storing. If you're uncertain, send us your heaviest pallet spec and we'll calculate it.

Do I need a permit to install racking in my warehouse?

Most standard racking installations don't require a building permit, but if you're adding a mezzanine floor integrated with the racking, or if the rack height and load exceed certain thresholds, BCA or SCDF submission may be required. We coordinate that as part of the project if it applies. If you're unsure, we check during the site survey and let you know before you commit.

Can I reuse racking from a previous warehouse?

Sometimes. We inspect the uprights, beams, and connectors for impact damage, rust, weld cracks, and beam sag. If they pass, we recalculate the load rating for your new layout, forklift, and slab. If they're bent, corroded, or the beam hooks are worn, we replace the damaged components or recommend a new system. Reusing unsafe racking is a liability we won't take on, and neither should you.

How long does a storage racking system installation take?

For a typical Selective system—20 to 40 bays, single-level warehouse—we usually complete fabrication within two weeks and installation within three to five working days, depending on access and your operating hours. Drive-In, VNA, or mezzanine-integrated systems take longer because of the additional bracing, guide rails, and structural coordination. We give you a detailed schedule in the quote so you can plan around it.
