Pallet Racking Load Capacity: Working Out the Load Class You Actually Need

Ask three racking suppliers for a price and you can get three different answers for what looks like the same run of bays. Very often the difference is not the steel price or the margin. It is that each of them assumed a different load, because nobody was told what the pallets actually weigh.
The load class is the single decision that most affects both what a bay costs and whether it is still straight in five years. Get it too low and the beams bow. Get it too high across the whole warehouse and you pay for steel your stock never needed. This article is about working out the right number before you ask anyone for a quotation.
Three numbers that get mixed up: per pallet, per level, per bay
Most confusion about racking capacity comes from people quoting different numbers without saying which one they mean.
- Per pallet is what one loaded pallet weighs. This is the number you own, and the one most businesses have never measured.
- Per beam level is what one pair of beams is rated to carry, across every pallet sitting on it. If a level holds two pallets, the level rating has to cover both of them together.
- Per bay is what the whole stack between two upright frames is rated for, across all its levels. It is a separate figure, and it is not simply the level rating multiplied by the number of levels.
Our V-series range is named on the per-level number, deliberately. The figure in the product name is the rated load per beam level in kilograms: V3000 is 3,000 kg per level, V8000 is 8,000 kg per level. When a supplier gives you a capacity, ask which of the three it is. If they cannot say, that tells you something about how the design was done.
Start with your heaviest pallet, not your average one
We size racking against the heaviest pallet you actually run, not the average. The reason is simple: the racking does not know which pallet is going where. The forklift driver puts the heavy one wherever there is a gap, including the top level, and the beam has to carry it on the day that happens.
Averages hide the problem. A warehouse whose pallets "weigh about 800 kg" may have a handful of lines that are far heavier: drinks, liquids in drums, paper, metal parts, anything dense. Those are the pallets that decide the class.
How to find the real number, this week:
- Look at your inbound paperwork. Supplier delivery orders, packing lists and shipping documents often state a gross weight per pallet or per shipment.
- Weigh the heavy lines. If you have a forklift scale, a pallet scale or access to a weighbridge, weigh the densest few SKUs rather than guessing them.
- List the top five heaviest pallets and note which SKU each one is. That short list is more useful to a racking designer than a warehouse-wide average.
- Ask what is coming. If sales is about to take on a heavier product line, the racking you buy now has to carry it.
The catalogue number is not the working number
A catalogue rating tells you what the racking will hold under ideal conditions: loads placed centrally, nothing knocked, no corrosion. Real warehouses are not like that. Forklifts clip uprights, pallets land off-centre, and steel ages. The real-world rating is 70–80% of the catalogue figure once impact damage, off-centre loading and corrosion are allowed for, and that is the number we design to. We tell you what the headroom is.
Here is why that matters. Suppose your heaviest level, with two of your heaviest pallets on it, comes to about 2,600 kg. On a catalogue reading, a 3,000 kg level looks comfortable. At 70–80%, that same level is working with roughly 2,100 to 2,400 kg, which is below what you intend to put on it. A job like that gets looked at for the next class up, or for a layout that keeps the heaviest lines off that level. The survey is where that is confirmed, not a spreadsheet, but it shows how a "safe" catalogue number can be the wrong one.

What each load class is for
These are the five classes in our V-series Heavy-Duty range and the kind of load each is used for.
- V3000 (up to 3,000 kg per beam level): The most-installed racking in our catalogue. Typical Singapore 3PL and FMCG pallet operations.
- V5000 (up to 5,000 kg per beam level): Heavier pallets: drinks, raw materials, packaged FMCG over 1.5 t each, or a single tier doubling up two pallet positions.
- V6000 (up to 6,000 kg per beam level): Multi-pallet beam loads, machinery, drums. Hot-rolled members, with base-plate fixings sized to the actual slab capacity.
- V8000 (up to 8,000 kg per beam level): Oversized pallets, drums, raw steel, machinery components, automotive parts. Box-section beams up to 175×65 mm.
- V10000 (10,000+ kg per beam level): Steel coils, marine equipment, bulk machinery on engineered pallets. The rating is design-verified per project.
Most general warehouses land in V3000. The higher classes exist because some stock genuinely needs them, not because heavier is automatically safer.
What the load class does to the price
This is where getting the number right pays for itself. Indicative ranges from recent Singapore installations, per bay:
- V3000 selective: S$380–S$650 per bay
- V5000: S$650–S$1,000 per bay
- V8000: S$900–S$1,400 per bay
Within each class the price moves with height, beam length, seismic class, finish and the floor-fix detail, and the same selective bay can vary by 50–80% depending on the load case. That is why we do not publish a flat per-bay price and quote after a site survey instead.
Two mistakes follow from those ranges. The first is under-specifying to win on price, which is how a quote ends up cheaper than the others. The second, which nobody talks about, is over-specifying the whole warehouse for a few heavy lines. If only a small part of your stock is dense, it is worth asking whether those lines can live in their own bays or on the lowest levels, rather than paying the next class up on every bay you buy. Whether that works depends on your layout and how disciplined the put-away is, and it is exactly the kind of question a survey should answer.
What under-specified racking looks like
It rarely fails on day one. It fails slowly, and the first person to notice is usually not the buyer. The line we hear goes something like: the catalogue said 2,500 kg per level, and the forklift driver said the second-from-top beam was bowing after week six.
Signs worth taking seriously:
- Beams that visibly sag in the middle when loaded, or pallets that no longer slide in cleanly.
- Drivers avoiding particular levels or bays "because they feel wrong".
- No load notice on the racking, so nobody on the floor knows the limit. Rack load notices covers what one should state.

If you are unsure what your existing racking is rated for, an inspection is the way to find out. We inspect under SS EN 15635 principles and give a written report with green, amber and red triage. Typical cost is S$3.50–S$6.00 per upright frame, with a S$1,200 minimum per site visit.
The floor has to carry it as well
A heavier load class moves more weight down through fewer points. A 25 MPa slab takes typical selective loads without complaint, but drive-in and VNA racking put higher point loads through the base plates, and sometimes the slab needs reinforcement or thicker base plates. On the heavier classes we size the base-plate fixings to the actual slab capacity. We check before quoting.

When pallet racking is the wrong answer
Not every storage problem needs a load class at all. If your stock is cartons and parts loaded by hand, boltless shelving handles up to 200 kg per level and is cost-effective for that kind of stock. Boltless shelving versus pallet racking sets out how to decide.
And if the scope is small, we will say so. Our smallest installs are 20–50 pallet positions. Below a budget of about S$5,000 the job usually does not justify a site survey, and we would rather point you to a local shelving supplier than sell you racking you do not need.
What to send before you ask for a quotation
You will get more accurate and more comparable quotes if every supplier works from the same information. Put this on one page:
- Your heaviest pallet weight, and how you got the figure (weighed, delivery paperwork, or estimate).
- A rough split: how many pallets are light, typical and heavy.
- Pallet type and size, for example the 1200×1000 mm Singapore standard, Euro 1200×800 mm or plastic.
- How many pallets you want per level, and how many levels.
- Floor area and ceiling height.
- Forklift type.
- Whether any heavier product lines are coming.
- Whether the unit is owned or leased.
Then ask each supplier to state, in writing, the rated load per beam level and per bay they have designed to. If two quotes differ a lot in price, that line usually explains why.
The short version
- Know which number you are talking about: per pallet, per beam level or per bay.
- Size to your heaviest pallet, not your average. Weigh the dense lines.
- A catalogue rating is not the working rating. Allow for the real-world 70–80%.
- V3000 suits most general warehouses. Go heavier because the stock needs it, not by default.
- Per-bay price rises with the class, so do not rate the whole warehouse for a few heavy lines without asking whether they can be kept apart.
- Check the floor, and the lease, before the class is fixed.
