Boltless Shelving vs Pallet Racking in Singapore: Which Your Stock Actually Needs
Two systems get quoted for the same warehouse all the time, and they are not competing products. Boltless shelving and pallet racking answer different questions, and the reason people end up with the wrong one is that the decision gets made on price per bay rather than on how the stock actually moves.
The question that settles it is not how much you are storing. It is who or what puts the goods away.
The one question that decides it
If a person carries the item and places it on a shelf by hand, you are in boltless territory. If a forklift lifts a loaded pallet and sets it down, you need pallet racking.
Everything else — height, weight, aisle width, cost — follows from that single fact, because the two systems are engineered around completely different load cases. Pallet racking is designed for a concentrated load arriving fast, at height, on the end of a machine that will eventually hit it. Boltless shelving is designed for distributed load placed gently by hand.
This is why putting palletised goods on shelving is not a saving. It is a system being used outside what it was built for.
What boltless shelving is actually for
The boltless systems we install use rivet-lock construction, and they suit carton picking, retail back-of-house, parts bins and archive storage. Shelves are hand-loadable up to 200 kg per level, with a powder-coated finish, in standard sizes of 900 × 300 × 1800 mm and 1200 × 450 × 1800 mm, or custom where the space demands it.
Read that 200 kg per level carefully, because it is the number people misuse. It is a level rating for hand-placed, reasonably distributed load. It is not permission to stack 200 kg in one corner of a shelf, and it is not a figure to compare directly against a pallet racking beam rating — the two are measuring different things under different assumptions.
Where boltless genuinely wins:
- Broken-case and piece picking. If your pickers open cartons and take units, shelving at human height is faster than anything a forklift can offer.
- Small, light, high-variety SKUs. Spare parts, consumables, retail replenishment stock.
- Archive and document storage, where the boxes are uniform and rarely move.
- Tight or awkward spaces, including mezzanine levels and back-of-house rooms where a forklift was never going to fit anyway.
- Speed of change. Shelving goes up quickly and moves easily when the layout changes.
What pallet racking is actually for
Selective pallet racking is the default for most Singapore warehouses because it gives 100% pallet selectivity — every pallet is directly reachable from the aisle — and it reconfigures bay by bay as the business changes. It suits any pallet size and weight class, and it is designed around a forklift being present.
That last point is the one that carries the real consequences. Selective racking normally works to aisle widths in the region of 3.5 to 4.0 metres for conventional trucks, and that aisle is not wasted space — it is the operating requirement. If you are comparing a shelving layout against a racking layout on pallet positions per square metre, and you have not counted the aisle, the comparison is wrong.
Pallet racking also brings obligations that shelving largely does not: load notices stating what each configuration may carry, anchoring to the floor, and inspection over its life. Most warehouses need both
This is the answer that does not fit a comparison table, and it is usually the right one.
A typical Singapore operation receives goods on pallets, stores them on pallets, then breaks them down for picking. The bulk stock belongs on pallet racking. The pick face belongs on shelving. Trying to do both jobs with one system means either forklift-handling things that should be hand-picked, or hand-picking from a rack that was designed for a forklift.
The layout question then becomes where the boundary sits — which SKUs justify a full pallet position and which should live on a shelf. That is driven by how fast each line moves, not by how much of it you own. Slow-moving stock in full pallet positions is the single most common way a warehouse runs out of space while looking half empty.
The mistakes we are called in to fix
- Shelving bought for palletised goods because the quote was cheaper per bay. The stock never comes off the pallets, so the shelving is loaded by forklift, and it was never designed for that.
- Racking bought for a hand-pick operation. Full pallet bays holding a quarter of a pallet of small parts, with staff climbing to reach the upper level. Expensive and unsafe at once.
- Comparing on price per bay. A boltless bay and a pallet racking bay hold entirely different things. The number to compare is cost per unit of stock actually stored and picked, which usually reverses the apparent answer.
- Buying for today's stock profile only. If your SKU mix is moving toward smaller, faster lines, an all-pallet layout will be wrong within two years.
- Forgetting the height rules change. Shelving at 1800 mm is reachable. Pallet racking earns its money by going up, which brings floor flatness, truck capability and inspection into the conversation.
Five questions before you buy either
- What proportion of your goods stay on their pallet from receipt to dispatch?
- How many picks a day are full pallets, and how many are cartons or units?
- What handling equipment do you have now, and what will you have in two years?
- What is the clear height, and what is above it — sprinklers, lighting, services?
- Is the floor suitable for what is being proposed, and has anyone actually checked rather than assumed?
If the honest answer to the first question is "most of it", you are buying pallet racking and the only real question is which type. If it is "almost none", you are buying shelving. In between, you are buying both, and the value is in getting the split right.
What our quotes look like
We do not publish racking prices, because a meaningful number depends on your SKU mix, your handling equipment, your clear height and your floor. What we do instead is survey the site and tell you which system is wrong for your operation before telling you what we would build. If the answer is that a run of shelving solves it and you do not need racking at all, that is what we will say.
