Relocating Pallet Racking to a New Warehouse: Decommission and Reinstall
Moving warehouse is the one time your racking gets handled by people who did not install it, under time pressure, with the operation waiting on the other end. Done properly it is straightforward and your racking arrives no worse than it left. Done as an afterthought it is where damaged uprights, missing components and an unusable layout come from — and none of that shows up until you are trying to trade out of the new unit.
We decommission and reinstall racking as a service, so this is the sequence we actually run and what decides whether a move goes well.
First question: should it move at all?
Not all racking is worth relocating, and it is better to know that before it is on a lorry.
- Does it fit the new building? Clear height, column grid, sprinkler arrangement and floor condition are all different in the new unit. Racking that suited an 8 m building may waste a metre of height in a 9 m one, and a bay pattern that worked around the old columns rarely lands cleanly around new ones.
- Is it in condition to move? Frames with impact damage should not be reinstalled as they are. Moving is the moment that damage becomes visible, and reinstalling a bent upright is how you carry a known problem into a new building.
- Do you still have the components? Safety pins, locking clips, footplates and shims disappear over years of operation. Reinstalling without them is not a reinstall.
- Is the load case the same? If the move comes with a change in what you store, the design has to be checked against the new load, not the old one.
Sometimes the honest answer is that part of the racking moves and part is replaced. We would rather tell you that at survey than reinstall something that will not serve you.
The sequence that works
1. Survey both ends, before anything is quoted
The old unit tells us what you have — bay counts, frame heights, beam levels, condition, and how it is fixed down. The new unit tells us what can be built — clear height, column positions, floor flatness and slab condition, sprinkler clearance, and where the aisles have to run for your forklift. Quoting a relocation from a photograph of the old warehouse is guessing at half the job.
2. Design the new layout before you dismantle
This is the step people skip, and it is the one that costs. A relocation is a fresh layout using existing components, not a copy-paste. Frame heights and beam lengths you already own are the constraint; the aisle widths your trucks need and the columns in the new building are the givens. Work that out first and the reinstall is an assembly job. Work it out afterwards and you will be short of beams in one run and holding spares you cannot use in another.

3. Inspect as you dismantle, not after
Dismantling is the only time every frame is accessible and unloaded. That is the moment to check plumbness, impact damage, beam deflection and base plates — the same points covered in an inspection checklist. Components that fail get set aside then and there, and you find out what you need to replace while there is still time to order it.
4. Label, bundle and count
Frames and beams look interchangeable and are not. Beam lengths, frame heights and connector types get mixed on the lorry and lost on arrival. Bundling by type, labelling, and counting out and in is dull work that removes an entire category of delay at the other end.
5. Reinstall to the new design, then check the floor
The new slab is not the old slab. Floor flatness and slab capacity govern how the racking is fixed and, for taller runs, whether it can be built at the height you want at all — the point we make in selective racking at 8 m and the floor flatness survey. Fixings are into a floor with its own condition and its own joints; that gets checked before the first frame is stood, not after the run is up.
6. Hand over with an inspection, not just a photo
Finish with an SS EN 15635 inspection of the reinstalled system. It gives you a written baseline for the new site — plumbness, damage, safety pins, beam deflection, base-plate fixings, with green, amber and red triage — so any damage that appears later can be dated. What decides the programme
For planning, our new-build lead time is typically 4 to 6 weeks from signed quotation to handover — about a week for layout and structural sign-off, two to three weeks for fabrication in our Singapore workshop, and one to two weeks for installation. A relocation removes most of the fabrication, but adds the dismantle, the transport and any replacement components that the inspection turns up. Those replacement parts are the item most likely to move your date, which is the argument for inspecting at dismantle rather than at reinstall.
The other real constraint is overlap. If you are running out of the old unit while building the new one, the work has to be staged — a subject we cover in staging an installation around a live operation.
Where authority endorsement comes in
Plain pallet racking usually does not require a submission, but a mezzanine does, and so can racking that carries a PE-stamped design or interacts with the fire protection in the building. Sprinkler clearance in particular is decided by the new building, not by your old layout — see SCDF sprinkler clearance and racking approval. What to have ready when you call
- The address of both units, and your target date for being operational in the new one.
- Roughly how many bays and what type — selective, drive-in, VNA, cantilever, boltless.
- The clear height of the new unit and, if you know it, the slab specification.
- Your forklift type, especially if it is changing with the move.
- Whether anything about what you store is changing.
Warranty terms are worth knowing before you plan a move: our standard 5-year structural warranty covers the frame against manufacturing defect and the 1-year workmanship warranty covers installation — but forklift impact damage is not covered by either, which is exactly why inspection at dismantle matters. Relocation is quoted after the survey of both units; there is no per-bay figure that would survive contact with two real buildings.
